We often talk about careers in terms of decisions and actions, but far less about attention. And yet, attention is what sits underneath both. What you notice. What you prioritise. What you respond to first. What you allow to interrupt you. In my corporate career, and now in my coaching work, I’ve seen how easily capable people lose momentum not because they lack ability, but because their attention is constantly fragmented. They are pulled between competing priorities, expectations, and versions of success that don’t quite align. Research in psychology and organisational behaviour supports this. Studies consistently show that sustained focus improves decision quality, learning, and performance, while chronic distraction increases stress and reduces effectiveness. More importantly, attention is not neutral. It reinforces what we value. What receives consistent attention begins to define our identity at work. After periods of change, this matters even more. Without intentional focus, people often slip back into patterns that feel familiar rather than aligned. They respond to urgency instead of importance. Over time, this can recreate the very misalignment they were trying to move away from. The cost of unfocused attention is subtle but cumulative. Progress slows. Energy drains. Work feels busy but strangely unsatisfying. Focus, when chosen deliberately, acts as a stabiliser. It allows momentum to consolidate rather than dissipate. Attention isn’t about narrowing your world too soon. It’s about choosing what you are willing to stand behind for this next phase, and letting other things wait.
