After a January that felt quieter for many, February often becomes the point where movement starts to feel possible again. For some people, this is when questions start to sharpen. Not just what do I want? but what am I actually going to do about it?

This month is about momentum. Not rushing or forcing, but beginning to move with intention. Taking what you now know about yourself and allowing it to shape real choices.

In my experience, momentum doesn’t come from sudden clarity or dramatic decisions. It builds when people stop waiting for certainty and start working with what they already know. Direction gives you orientation. Momentum comes from testing direction when it’s ready to be tested, in the real world.

What often stalls people at this stage isn’t lack of capability. It’s isolation. Trying to hold everything alone. Assuming you need a fully formed plan before involving others.

This issue explores how momentum builds through three things: clarity of direction, small intentional action, and the right support around you.

After the initial pause and reflection, many people assume the next step is a detailed plan. Timelines. Targets. Contingencies. But research and experience suggest momentum rarely starts that way.

Momentum builds when people begin to act in alignment, even before they feel fully ready.

Studies into behaviour change and decision making show that progress is more likely when goals are broken into small, identity-affirming actions rather than large, outcome-driven leaps. People gain confidence not from thinking their way into action, but from acting their way into confidence.

This is especially true in career decisions. Waiting until you feel completely certain can keep you stuck far longer than necessary. Momentum often comes from small tests. Conversations. Experiments. Boundary changes. Information gathering. These actions generate feedback, and feedback creates clarity.

There’s also an important relational element here. Research into career development consistently shows that people who involve others earlier (mentors, peers, coaches, sponsors) make more sustainable decisions than those who try to navigate change alone. Support doesn’t remove uncertainty, but it makes it more manageable.

The cost of not building momentum at this stage is subtle but significant. People remain in a holding pattern. They think about change without moving towards it. Over time, this can turn into frustration, self-doubt, or a belief that they’re “bad at decisions”, when in reality they’ve just been trying to do it all in their head.

Momentum doesn’t require a perfect plan. It requires direction, action small enough to be doable, and support that helps you stay steady as you move.

This keeps action purposeful rather than reactive. You’re not committing. You’re learning.

As you move through February, try returning to one of these pauses:

• What feels ready for movement now, even if it feels imperfect?

• What small action would reduce uncertainty rather than add pressure?

• Who could support me if I didn’t try to do this alone?

• What would “enough progress” look like this month?

Choose one. Sit with it. Let it guide your next step.

🧠 Coaching Insight

A client recently shared that she felt she was still stuck because she didn’t have a clear plan. When we looked more closely, she already had direction. What she lacked was permission to start small and involve others.

Once she identified one conversation to have and one person to ask for support, everything shifted. Momentum didn’t come from certainty. It came from movement.

Why this matters: progress builds when action, direction and support work together. You don’t need to do everything. You just need to begin.
