January often arrives with an unspoken expectation that we should know exactly where we’re going. Goals. Plans. Outcomes. A sense of certainty. And yet, for many people, especially those at a career crossroads, that pressure creates more anxiety than clarity. I see this pattern repeatedly in my coaching work, and it’s one I recognise from my own corporate career. In my early twenties, I formed a clear picture of who I thought I needed to become. Successful. Progressive. Impressive. That image served me for a while. But as I grew, learned and changed, it didn’t evolve with me. I kept chasing an idea of success that had been shaped before I had any real understanding of myself, my values, or what I actually wanted work to feel like. The cost didn’t show up immediately. It rarely does. Instead, it surfaced gradually as restlessness, a constant sense of pressure, and a feeling that no milestone ever quite landed. I was achieving, but I wasn’t aligned. This is the cost I now see in others. Not a lack of ambition, but people exhausting themselves chasing goals that belong to an earlier version of who they were. They keep pushing because stopping feels risky, yet over time that misalignment shows up as disengagement, frustration, or burnout that seems to come from nowhere. This is where direction becomes more useful than goals. Direction gives you orientation without demanding certainty. It helps you decide how you want work to feel, what you’re no longer willing to compromise on, and what matters enough to prioritise, even if the exact role or next step isn’t yet clear. It acts as a compass rather than a checklist. There is strong evidence to support this approach. Research in motivation psychology consistently shows that people who anchor their decisions to values and internal direction experience greater wellbeing and more sustained motivation than those driven primarily by external targets. One of the most robust bodies of research in this area, Self-Determination Theory, demonstrates that autonomy, meaning and alignment are far stronger predictors of long-term performance than rigid goal pursuit alone. Research into career adaptability reinforces this further. Studies show that people who focus on orientation, identity and learning are better equipped to navigate change than those focused solely on predefined outcomes. In fast-changing environments, precision becomes fragile. Direction gives you something stable to return to when roles evolve, priorities shift, or certainty disappears. This is the work I come back to most often with experienced professionals who look successful on paper but feel increasingly disconnected from their work. They don’t need bigger goals. They need a clearer sense of direction that reflects who they are now, not who they were expected to be. For many people, January isn’t about setting new goals. It’s about choosing a direction that feels true enough to follow, and trusting that clarity will continue to unfold as they move.
